Global Angel Wings Art Descends on The Ridings in UK First

30th August 2017

We’re delighted that The Ridings has become a backdrop for the first ever UK piece of Global Angels Wings street art, by international artist Colette Miller. An exterior wall of the centre, next to our Cathedral entrance, has now been adorned with a pair of human-sized angel wings, which invite people to become part of the art by standing in front of them to take photos.

The artist was introduced to Wakefield by Yorkshire businesswoman and broadcaster Kate Hardcastle, whose international business consultancy work first brought her in contact with the artist. Kate says, “The Global Angel Wings Project combines the beauty of the art installation and community enrichment with a worldwide pledge to bring more togetherness and harmony. As a Yorkshire lass, I dedicate much of my time to community and charity projects within our beautiful region. It has been an honour to introduce the artist, Colette Miller, to Wakefield and encourage her to site her first UK piece in an emerging city with such a significant art scene, which I am proud to call home.”

Based in LA, Miller created the Global Angel Wings Project in her home city in 2012 and has since painted wings around the world, to remind humanity that they are ‘the angels of this earth’. Speaking about the Wakefield installation, Miller says, “I’m really excited to be bringing the Global Angel Wings Project to Wakefield and Yorkshire and I’ve read about its layered and fascinating history. I haven’t had any wings in England yet so this will be the first pair. I understand that Wakefield and The Ridings are bringing a lot of energy and focus to bringing positivity to this area and if I can play a small part in it in any way I am completely grateful.”

The owner of the Ridings Shopping Centre, NewRiver, has commissioned the work, however, all of the wings around the world are not expressly owned by anyone, not even the artist.

The Ridings’ Centre Director Lee Appleton says, “We’re thrilled to host the first ever Angel Wings in the UK and can’t wait to see people from Wakefield and further afield come to enjoy and interact with the wings. This is an amazing gift to Wakefield and after The Hepworth was recently crowned Artfund Museum of the Year 2017, this is the cherry on the top of a fantastic year for Wakefield’s cultural scene”.
